Drug Crimes

When You Have Been Charged With a Drug Crime

Many drug charges start with narcotics investigators. Working undercover, an investigator usually makes a request that someone help them buy drugs. An unsuspecting person may bring them to an alleged drug dealer. After the undercover investigator witnesses what he or she believes to be the purchase or sale of drugs, the police are called in. Often, people accused of drug crimes do not even know that an undercover officer was involved in the set up.

Other drug charges begin with routine traffic stops, driver’s license checks or DWI checkpoints. An officer may ask, “Do you mind if I search your car?” When this search turns up evidence of a drug crime, you need a lawyer.

The Consequences of a Drug Crime Conviction

The consequences of a drug crime conviction vary with the crime charged and the amount of drugs involved. Drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with intent to sell or deliver are some of the most common drug crimes. Possession with intent to sell or deliver carries especially serious consequences. People facing these charges are often accused of the crime because of the way the drugs were packaged — regardless of whether or not they were actually intending to sell drugs.
